Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Rayne

There are a couple of etymological approaches one can take with the modern-day coinage Rayne. For one, it could simply be an Americanized respelling of Reine which is the French word for “queen” (from the Latin Regina). Secondly, Rayne could be a respelling of the English vocabulary word “rain” which describes water droplets falling from the sky (the Olde English “regn” is derived from a Germanic word meaning the same, which may have ultimately been influenced by the Latin “rigare” meaning “to wet, moisten”). Finally, Rayne is a surname that may have developed in a number of ways: either from the Old French “ragin” meaning “mighty counsel”, or as a metronymic surname from the French Reine “queen”, or lastly as a place name so-called Raine in Scotland. Our best guess is that Rayne is a feminized respelling of Rain and therefore a modern-day “nature” name.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME RAYNE

Rayne is basically a 21st century name invention, but clearly it was inspired by the regal “queenly” names such as Reine, Raina or Regina. Or else it’s a pretty way to render the refreshing element that is rain; perhaps a good name for a baby girl born on a rainy day – or for one born under one of the three “water” signs of the zodiac (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces). Rayne is simple and pretty, and although we generally don’t like mutilated respellings of common names or vocabulary words, somehow this one works even better than Rain. Especially for a girl. Rayne is delicate looking and less “hippy-ish” than Rain. Rain conjures up a sense of cleanliness and renewal; it provides essentially water for the earth and its inhabitants. Water is a mutable, dynamic and calming element. Seriously, this is a name that doesn't stop growing on us, especially the more “Rayne” we get.
