Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Rogelio

A lot of people erroneously believe that Rogelio is the Spanish form of Roger, but this is not true (the Portuguese form of Roger is Rogério). Rather Rogelio is a Spanish masculine name derived from the Latin Rogatus, a name which dates back to Antiquity. Rogatus comes from the Latin word “rogatus” meaning “to ask for, request, inquire” and was borne by an early saint who was martyred in Africa during the persecutions of the Roman Empire sometime in the first four centuries A.D. The Spanish form of Rogelio is the only language in which this old Latin name has persisted and we’re not sure why. Perhaps for Spanish Catholics naming one’s son Rogelio is a way of “requesting” or “asking” Jesus Christ for the absolution of sins.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME ROGELIO

Rogelio has maintained a position on the American male naming charts since 1929. The name rose in usage as the Hispanic-American population grew over time; and then it leveled off in popularity during the 1980s and 90s. Now that we’ve crossed the threshold into the 21st century, Rogelio isn’t faring as well – the name seems to be headed down toward the bottom of the Top 1000 list. Distinctly Spanish, Rogelio is a name rarely used outside of the Spanish-speaking population (although it is not uncommon in the Filipino-American community). Rogelio is one of those names that must be pronounced with a Spanish accent (otherwise it would sound like ro-JEL-lee-o in an American accent). In its own Spanish tongue, however, Rogelio is three syllables, handsome, romantic and poetic.
