Sariyah

There are a few things we can tell you about Sariyah for sure. For one, it’s a modern coinage. Secondly, it’s used almost exclusively in the United States. Thirdly, it’s a particular favorite among African-Americans. And lastly, it follows a specific trend that fanatically favors the “-iya(h)” suffix. Don’t believe us? Here’s a smattering of examples: Aaliyah, Aniyah, Kaliyah, Mariyah, Saniyah, Taliyah, Zaniyah (and that’s just a few). In other words, Sariyah is most likely a made-up name and a trend follower. Having said that, there might be other inspirations behind this name we could entertain. For instance, Sariyah could be a “bling, bling” rendition of boring old Sarah (which comes from the Hebrew meaning “princess”). It could be the repurposing of an ancient Hebrew masculine name, Seraiah (שְׂרָיָה), meaning “Yahweh is ruler” (a name borne from the Bible as the father of Ezra). Lastly, Sariyah could be an English transliteration of سارية, which is the Arabic word for “mast, pole, staff”.
