Sasha has never showed up on the male naming charts in the United States (at least not for the past 130 years). For females, however, Sasha has had a more illustrative career. She made her debut in 1972 and quickly advanced in popularity. The highest Sasha has come on the charts is the Top 150 list of most favored girl names in America (1988). The name also saw a big gain in 2009, the year after Barack Obama was elected to the Presidency, when Americans were introduced to his darling daughters Malia and Sasha. With its Eastern European roots, Sasha has a strong and confident quality. But it’s also gentle and “mooshy” – like someone you just want to cuddle. We think it works equally as well on boys or girls, but in America the name is really only used on females (Americans are generally uncomfortable with the feminine “-a” suffix on boys). Sasha is an all around adorable name that ages well into adulthood. Other variant forms include Sascha (which is how Jerry Seinfeld spells his daughter’s name), Sacha (which we think sounds masculine despite the “a” ending), and Saskia (a German or Dutch name). We would definitely put this name in the “cool” category. It’s so cool that Beyoncé uses it (Sasha Fierce) as her alter-ego.
