Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Scott

Scot, or its variant spellings of Scott and Scotte, first appeared in Late Latin texts circa 400 AD, probably from an ancient term coined by Britons or Gauls for a particular sect of Gaels who originally lived in Ireland before conquering the west coast of Scotland in the 5th century. Linguistically, it doesn't appear to be Gaelic or a name the Gaels would have used for themselves and may have originated from a derogatory term used by their enemies under warlike conditions. From the Latin, it came into Old English, where it was originally a surname denoting someone from or in Scotland, as in Sean the Scot, later becoming simply Sean Scott. Eventually, parents proud of their Scottish heritage began giving the first name Scott to their sons.
