Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Shaniya

Shaniya is probably an Americanized fanciful respelling of Shania, a name brought into the American consciousness by country-rock musician Shania Twain in the mid-1990s. The Canadian born pop-star was actually born Eilleen Regina Edwards but received the Twain surname after her step-father Jerry Twain adopted her and her sisters. Twain eventually changed her first name to Shania in honor of Jerry’s Ojibwa (Native American) ancestry. She has always maintained that Shania means “on my way” in the Ojibwa language. This is widely considered folk etymology because no one seems to be able to support this claim. In any case, the name Shania and now Shaniya are largely believed to mean “on my way”. In this case, perception becomes reality. American parents are currently enamored with the “-ya” and “-yah” suffixes, so we weren’t surprised to see Shania altered in this manner.

The name Shania appeared on the female naming charts in 1995 as Shania Twain’s musical career in America got under way. Shaniya with the added “y” followed shortly thereafter in 1999. Shaniya saw some success on the charts as the name climbed to the high end of low usage, but it has dropped significantly in recent years. These types of “kreeatyve” respellings tend to come and go in popularity rather quickly. There just too non-traditional to have a lasting impact. Rather, they’re more reflective of fleeting fads and hasty trends. It probably won’t be before long Shaniya disappears from our memory altogether. It’s also one of those funky spellings that name bearers have to go through life confirming and reconfirming the spelling and pronunciation of their name. This is often a nuisance. Yet when you look at and hear the name Shania and Shaniya, you can’t help but to agree they’re pretty, unusual and original. She’s just no longer “on her way” up the charts.
