Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Sif

Sif is a name of Scandinavian origin; essentially it’s the singular form of the Old Norse “sifjar” meaning “bride” (to marry), from the Proto-Germanic *sibja- meaning "blood relation, kin, relative, one’s own." In Norse Mythology, Sif is the wife of Thor (god of thunder); a fertility goddess remembered for her incomparable golden locks of hair. One night as Sif lay innocently asleep, the trickster god Loki snuck into her bed chamber and lopped off her beautiful tresses. All that was left was a soft glowing mass of hair on the floor and unattractive stubble on her head. When she discovered what Loki had done, Sif sobbed uncontrollably all morning. Thor demanded that Loki repair the damage immediately or else endure some serious consequences. So Loki retreated to the land of the elves and summoned two dwarves to spin some gold as fine as Sif’s hair and infuse it with magical powers so that it would naturally grow on her head. The dwarves complied, and Sif reclaimed her honor as the goddess with the unrivaled golden hair. As a female given name, Sif doesn’t appear to be common anywhere, including Nordic countries.
