Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Sincere

Sincere is an English vocabulary word, an adjective describing someone’s thoughts, statements or feelings as being honest, genuine and without affectation. In other words, sincerity is 100% authentic and based on what is truly and deeply felt or believed. Ironically, we had difficulty uncovering a “sincere” etymological root for Sincere. The common story is that the word Sincere ultimately comes from two separate Latin words “sine” meaning “without” and “cerae” meaning “wax” (without wax). Even though this belief is widely considered folk etymology, we find the background justification pretty interesting. Apparently craftsmen of Ancient Rome who employed the usage of marble or mortar in the construction of statutes or structures would sometimes use a wax substance in order to cover up a mar or mistake. Some claimed wax was dishonestly used in place of mortar causing severe integrity problems with structures. In order to avoid an unscrupulous, dodgy person, one would seek a person “sin-cerae” or “without wax”. However, this clever etymology has pretty much been discounted by experts. In any case, Sincere somehow developed into a masculine given name in the United States at the beginning of the 21st century.

Personality

OF THE BOY NAME SINCERE

The number one personality is a leader - strong and competitive. They are willing to initiate action and take risks. One personalities work hard toward their endeavors and have the ability to apply their creative and innovative thinking skills with strong determination. They believe in their ability to succeed and are too stubborn to be hindered by obstacles. Ones meet obstacles head-on with such mental vigor and energy that you better step aside. They resent taking orders, so don't try telling them what to do either. This is an intensely active personality, but they are also known as starters rather than finishers. They have a propensity to become bored and will move quickly to the next project if not properly challenged.  They are the ones to think up and put into action new and brilliant ideas, but they are not the ones to stick around and manage them. This personality has an enthusiastic and pioneering spirit. They are distinctly original.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME SINCERE

We were actually astounded to see Sincere appear on the Top 1000 list of American boy names currently in circulation. Although vocabulary word names are not exactly a new thing to Americans, there still exists a different pattern of naming styles between boys and girls. Parents of baby daughters have a tendency to pick “touchy-feely” names like Precious, Cherish, Destiny and Karma. Parents of boys are drawn to the “rough-and-tumble” vocabulary word names like Cannon, Slade or Talon; not to mention superlatives like Legend, Major and King. It’s for this reason we find Sincere so out of place on the masculine charts. Obviously there are enough parents who disagree with us on this point; which is fine because we’re definitely not judging. We’re just surprised; that’s all. Parents who are selecting Sincere as a given name for their boys are obviously more enlightened and progressive than we would have given initial credit to, so we don’t mind being proven wrong. Sincere has only done so-so on the name charts and is still bestowed somewhat rarely, but he has “sincerely” managed to maintain a position on the Top 1000 list for well over ten years now. And, to top it off, he’s sticking to the charts “without wax”.
