Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Sky

Sky is an English vocabulary word signifying the uncertain distance high above us or the upper regions of the air. The English word is a modern mutation of the Old Saxon “scio” borrowed from the Old Norse “ský” meaning “cloud”. Around the 13th century “sky” came to replace the Olde English “heofon” (heaven) which was originally used to define the sky, but then came to mean “home of God” more specifically. The etymology of “sky” (i.e., “cloud”) is apropos since clouds are the visible masses of water particles which serve to both obscure and define the elusive sky. In essence, being in the sky meant being in the clouds anyway. The sky is where we look to find the sun and moon, the stars and the heavens, and perhaps the dwelling place of the image known as “God”. In daytime, the sky is blue because the air scatters blue sunlight more than it scatters red. At night, with the disappearance of the sun, the sky is dark except for the appearance of stars and moonlight. As a nature name, Sky is one of those “hippie” throwbacks like River, Echo or Rainbow. Today most folks are opting for Skye with an “e” on the end (the name is quite popular in Scotland, but also England and Australia). Sky without the “e” is much less common.

OF THE GIRL NAME SKY

The number one personality is a leader - strong and competitive. They are willing to initiate action and take risks. One personalities work hard toward their endeavors and have the ability to apply their creative and innovative thinking skills with strong determination. They believe in their ability to succeed and are too stubborn to be hindered by obstacles. Ones meet obstacles head-on with such mental vigor and energy that you better step aside. They resent taking orders, so don't try telling them what to do either. This is an intensely active personality, but they are also known as starters rather than finishers. They have a propensity to become bored and will move quickly to the next project if not properly challenged.  They are the ones to think up and put into action new and brilliant ideas, but they are not the ones to stick around and manage them. This personality has an enthusiastic and pioneering spirit. They are distinctly original.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME SKY

If you you’re a person drawn to nature names than look no farther than the Sky. Of course there are other nature inspired names like Meadow and Aspen, but the Sky is where all the mysteries are held. As a female given name, Sky is one syllable, three letters and quite understated. It’s easy to say and easy to spell. The name appeared on the U.S. charts in 1999 which was the first year in history that it was used with enough frequency to land a spot on the Top 1000 list. Still fairly uncommon and barely hanging on to the charts, Sky is in competition with her more popular sisters Skye and Skyla. Not to mention Skylar and Skyler (although unrelated in terms of etymology). Sky is arguably the purest spelling and definitely the most minimalistic.
