Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Skylar

Skylar is an anglicized form of Schuyler, a Dutch surname with roots in the Latin and Greek languages. The Greeks had a word (σχολή ) “skholi” which they used to describe a meeting place for leisurely discussion (and you know those ancient Athenians were always philosophizing on something). The Latins borrowed the word as “schola” meaning more specifically a “place for instruction and learning” (a school). The Medieval Latin “scholaris” specifically described a “scholar” or a teacher (one who was “of a school”). The word was eventually adopted by all other languages throughout Europe, such as the German Schüler and the Dutch Schuyler. Both of these words ultimately developed into Dutch and German surnames derived from occupations (i.e., a student or a schoolteacher). Because the Dutch people were among the earliest American colonizers, the name Schuyler goes way back to the 17th century in the United States. As a personal given name, originally considered exclusively masculine, Schuyler was used in honor of Philip Schuyler (1733-1804), a U.S. senator from the state of New York who had distinguished himself as a Revolutionary War hero. Schuyler’s off-shoots (Skyler and Skylar) are now considered unisex, although the former is more popular for baby boys while the latter is used more regularly on baby girls.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME SKYLAR

Both Skyler and Skylar are very trendy names in the United States right now. Although unisex in nature, Skylar with an “a” is definitely the preferred spelling for baby girls. In fact, 2012 marks the first year the name hit the Top 100 rankings on the American female naming charts. She is currently the 87th most popular girl’s name nationwide. That’s quite a feat considering Skylar only came into circulation for baby girls in 1990 (at least enough to hit the Top 1000). The name looked like it may have hit its peak in 1999 at position #131 on the charts, but in the past couple of years, interest in the name has picked up. It’s especially popular in the southern states – it’s ranked as the 26th most favorite girl’s name in Mississippi and Georgia, 37th and 38th in Louisiana and South Carolina, respectively, and a Top 50 choice in West Virginia, Maryland and Delaware. The irony of this? These are some of America’s most under-educated states – the ones least likely to produce a large number of “scholars” (West Virginia is ranked lowest in percentage of citizens with college degrees - 18.5%, Mississippi is ranked 2nd to lowest at 20% and Louisiana is the 5th worst in the country at 21%). Maybe all these new Skylars being born will eventually change these stats for the better!
