Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Sylas

Sylas is an Americanized respelling of Silas. The name Silas comes from the Bible, specifically the New Testament, and is a name of Greek and Latin origin. Silouanus in Greek and Silvanus in Latin mean “of the forest”, and are derivative of “silva” which means “wood”. Silas lived in the 1st century A.D. and was considered a leader within the Early Christian movement. He is most known as a prophet from Jerusalem who accompanied Paul on one of his missionary journeys to strengthen the churches. Silas’ story is mainly retold in the Book of Acts 16. During one of their missions, Paul and Silas are jailed by Roman citizens for “disturbing their city” and for advocating “customs that are not lawful” [Acts 16:20-21]. While imprisoned, the two men broke out into song (the hymns to God kind) and miraculously an earthquake shook their jail doors open and their shackles free. The jailor was so impressed, he immediately converted to Christianity on the spot! The name Silas was adopted by the Puritans in the 16th century. It was their custom to use lesser-known Biblical figures as a humble way of naming their children. Today the name Silas has been enjoying a revival in the United States, so of course some American parents have decided to alter the spelling to Sylas. It’s a very American thing to do…
