Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Tamia

Tamia is a name made famous by Canadian-born R&B singer Tamia Hill (who is married to basketball star Grant Hill). It’s basically an invented name probably coined from Tamara or Tamika. Although we have to come clean and let you know that “tamia” is the French word for “chipmunk” making this a great choice for a chubby-cheeked little baby girl. Really though, the popularity of Tamia spread throughout America thanks to the Grammy-nominated singer. It’s not a very common name in any English-speaking country but it has garnered notice in recent years.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME TAMIA

Tamia the singer (along with her name) came into the American public eye in 1996 with her collaborative hit single “Missing You” (with Gladys Knight, Brandy, and Chaka Khan). Obviously future American parents stood up and took notice because the name Tamia debuted on the charts at an impressive position #497 that same year. The name rose in popularity for the first few years but has since been on the decline. Her pop-culture status seems to be diminishing. It’s a nice sounding name but lacks any real etymology. Tamara, for example, comes from the Biblical name Tamar (from the Hebrew meaning “palm tree”) and Tamika is the female version of Tamiko, a Japanese transliteration meaning 多 (ta) "many", 美 (mi) "beautiful" and 子 (ko) "child". Tamia, on the other hand, is just a made-up name (yawn). Most people are unaware of the “chipmunk” French equivalent. At least that part is cute!
