Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Taryn

The name Taryn was popularized by actor Tyrone Power and his then-wife Mexican actress Linda Christian when they coined the name for their second daughter Taryn Stephanie Power in 1953. Linda came up with the name as a way of honoring the father, her husband, Tyrone. Tyrone is the name of a county in Northern Ireland, from the Irish Gaelic “Tir Eoghain” meaning “land of Eoghan” whereas Eoghan (pronounced like Owen) means “born from the yew tree”. The yew tree was sacred to the ancient Celts and revered almost as highly as the oak. They believed the yew symbolized immortality and had certain mystical powers. The darkly handsome matinee idol of the 1930s and 40s, Tyrone Power was of Irish descent and ultimately named after his great-grandfather, Irish actor Tyrone Power. Tyrone Power was a popular enough figure in American culture to influence the usage of a name, much like celebrity-culture does today. He apparently did so with Taryn. A lot of people think Taryn is derived from the Irish name Tara meaning “elevated place” in reference to the bulging hill where the High Kings of Ireland were anointed. But we can find no evidence of this.

All About the Baby Name – Taryn

Personality

OF THE GIRL NAME TARYN

Romance is the hallmark of the Six personality. They exude nurturing, loving, and caring energy. Sixes are in love with the idea of love in its idealized form - and with their magnetic personalities, they easily draw people toward them. Like the number Two personality, they seek balance and harmony in their life and the world at large. They are conscientious and service-oriented, and a champion for the underdog. These personalities naturally attract money and are usually surrounded by lovely material objects - but their human relationships are always primary. They thrive in giving back to others rather than being motivated by their own desires. This is when they achieve great things. Sixes are natural teachers, ministers and counselors.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME TARYN

Taryn first appeared on the American female naming charts in 1955, shortly after the birth of Taryn Power. It did not return to the charts until the mid-1970s when Taryn Power established herself as an actress in her own right, reintroducing her name to the American public about 20 years after her birth. In the past 40 odd years, it seems that Taryn is a name that doesn’t quite know what it wants to do on the charts. It’s had sporadic usage to say the least. The highest point Taryn ever reached on the American charts is at #227 in 1985. In other words, Taryn is definitely not a trendy name. Never has been and probably never will be. For those parents looking for a hidden gem with a tiny bit of Irish heritage and an interesting origin, this one might be worthy of considering. It’s back down to low levels of usage and barely given to 300 baby girls per year. It’s unique and original, but one thing to beware: it requires confirmation of pronunciation and spelling. This can often be a nuisance for the name bearer.
