Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Teagan

Teagan is the transferred use of an Irish surname, an anglicized form of the Gaelic Ó Tadhgáin meaning "descendent of Tadhgán". The personal name Tadhgán is a diminutive of “tadhg” which is an Old Irish word for a “poet, storyteller” (poets and storytellers played an integral role in early Celtic societies). For instance, we know Tadg was the first name of an 11th century king of Connacht (a medieval province in western Ireland). First a clan name, Ó Tadhgáin eventually morphed into the last name Teagan. Parents in the United States recently hijacked Teagan as a first name – originally used for girls and eventually becoming unisex. For baby girls, Teagan was likely inspired by names like Reagan or Meagan. Inspiration also came from the surname craze in the United States (the trendy usage of surnames as forenames). There are several other Irish surnames on the U.S. charts today such as Sullivan, Finnegan, and Keegan. Teagan seemed like a natural follower. However, Teagan is not to be confused with Tegan, a female name with different Celtic roots (Tegan is Welsh, not Irish).

Popularity

OF THE UNISEX NAME TEAGAN

The name Teagan first appeared on the female naming charts in America in 1999. In the past 10+ years, the name has soared almost 500 positions up the charts and is quickly approaching a spot on the Top 200 list of most favored girl names. Parents of little boys across America sat up and took notice. In 2004, Teagan debuted on the male naming charts officially bringing gender-neutrality to this old Irish surname. It’s not nearly as popular for little boys as it is for girls, but the name appears to have universal appeal. It does work well for either sex, as the name does not feel particularly feminine or masculine. Teagan definitely has that Irish quality and it’s an all-around lively, energetic sounding name. Still fairly new to the charts and not yet over-used, Teagan is an off-beat choice for either a girl or a boy. After all, your little baby is your greatest “poem”.
