Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Tiara

A tiara is a crown or headdress with a semicircular shape, usually bejeweled, and most commonly associated with members of the royalty (although in more modern times they have become symbolic of beauty pageants). The English adopted the word from the Greek (τιάρα) in the early 16th century, but it ultimately came from the Old Persian language (tiyārā) indicating “headdress of the Persian kings”. In the ancient Middle East, a tiara was actually worn by men, emperors and kings specifically, and looked quite different than how we would picture a tiara today (more of a cone shaped crown). What’s referred to as a “papal tiara” is the crown worn by popes. As a female given name, Tiara came into circulation in the early 1980s. It’s a name most distinct to the United States and doesn’t appear to be used within other English-speaking nations.
