Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Trevor

The name Trevor is the transferred use of a Welsh surname derived from a place name. Trevor comes from the Welsh or Cornish elements “tref” (meaning settlement or farmstead) and “fõr” ( meaning large). The word “tref” is also connected to the Irish Gaelic “treabhadh” which means ‘ploughing.’ Trefor is most notably the name of a peaceful seaside village on the northwest coast of Wales in Gwynedd but is also shared by many other settlements and villages throughout Wales and Cornwall. It was rare for Welsh surnames to be derived from a place name, but Trevor is one of the few examples. The surname was established by the 16th century although it’s not clear when it was adopted as a given name. We do know that Trevor became widely popular outside of the Welsh borders in the 20th century.

The cool thing about this name is that it’s from the Celtic nation of Wales, a country with a self-confident and spirited national identity. Like Cornwall and Brittany, the Welsh developed from the Brythonic branch (as opposed to the Irish/Scottish Gaelic branch) of the Celtic peoples. The name Trevor shares the same spirit and confidence of the homeland from which it came. It’s a name to be worn with pride.
