Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME VERA

Vera is a name that dates back to the late 19th century in America. At the turn of the 20th century, the name Vera had already landed a spot on the Top 100 list of most commonly used female names. The height of her popularity was really during the 19-teens when the name averaged around #65 in terms of popularity. Not bad for a once unknown name. By the 1930s and 40s it appeared as if Vera’s fashionable days were coming to an end. The name slowly fell from favor as the decades persisted into the 20th century. In fact, in 1984, the name Vera fell off the charts completely as she retreated back to obscurity. The name would remain off the charts for 25 years, only to reappear very recently in 2009. We’re not quite sure what prompted a renewed interest in this name – perhaps the famous fashion designer Vera Wang or the actress Vera Farmiga (who starred in the 2009 popular comedy drama “Up in the Air” with George Clooney). Apropos, Vera Farmiga is of Ukrainian descent. In any case, Vera is still a very lightly used female name today – given to less than 500 baby girls per year. Vera is a daring choice by today’s standards since so many people consider this name to be out-dated or old-fashioned. But that’s just part of her charm. We have “faith” that Vera will stick to the charts this time around.

Literary Characters

OF THE BABY NAME VERA

Vera Claythorne is a character in Agatha Christie’s most popular murder mystery, And Then There Were None, first published in 1939 (1940 in the United States). It is a cunning tale of eight people summoned to a mansion on a lonely island by an anonymous, absentee host, manned by a husband and wife housekeeping team, and where they begin to die off, one by one. None of them is acquainted with any other, and naturally, they begin to suspect each other as the bodies pile up. The character of Vera is a former governess now working as a “games-mistress”, who believes she is coming to the island for a summer secretarial job. Like all the others on the island, she harbors a dark secret from her past, one that will catch up with her this summer. No matter her crime or her punishment, Vera is a very intelligent, efficient woman whose psychological unraveling is uncomfortable to witness, as her guilt overtakes her, making her become more and more hysterical and prone to “seeing things”. Such is Vera’s innate strength that she is the very last one before “there were none”, and we rather hate to see her go.
