Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Xiomara

Xiomara is a Spanish female name, a Latin American feminized form of the Spanish and Portuguese masculine name Guiomar. Guiomar is most likely a remake of the ancient Germanic Wigmar meaning “famous in war”, from the Proto-Germanic elements “wiga” (war) and “mærjo” (renowned, well-known, famous). The Visigoths, a Germanic barbaric tribe who invaded, occupied (and ultimately assimilated into) the Iberian Peninsula after the sacking of Rome in 410 A.D., probably introduced the name Wigmar to the native Spanish and Portuguese. Eventually the name morphed into Guiomar. Xiomara apparently developed in Latin America as a newly coined female version of this ancient Germanic warrior.
