Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Yesenia

Yesenia is the Spanish vernacular name for a type of palm tree native to the Amazon rainforests of South America; from the genus Oenocarpus. Various species of the Yesenia tree are found in places such as Brazil, Bolivia, Columbia and Peru (among other countries). However, it’s not this sturdy little palm tree that prompted the usage of Yesenia as a girl’s name in Latin America. Rather that credit goes to a Mexican telenovela/film called “Yesenia” first produced for TV in 1970, made into a film in 1971, and finally remade into another telenovela in 1987. A classic of Mexican cinema, the 1971 film “Yesenia” (starring Jacqueline Andere as Yesenia) follows the story of a beautiful young Gypsy girl who falls in love with a military soldier (and he with her) despite the socio-political resistance to their union. The popular story was again repurposed for TV in 1987 starring the lovely Adela Noriega as Yesenia.

All About the Baby Name – Yesenia

Personality

OF THE GIRL NAME YESENIA

Romance is the hallmark of the Six personality. They exude nurturing, loving, and caring energy. Sixes are in love with the idea of love in its idealized form - and with their magnetic personalities, they easily draw people toward them. Like the number Two personality, they seek balance and harmony in their life and the world at large. They are conscientious and service-oriented, and a champion for the underdog. These personalities naturally attract money and are usually surrounded by lovely material objects - but their human relationships are always primary. They thrive in giving back to others rather than being motivated by their own desires. This is when they achieve great things. Sixes are natural teachers, ministers and counselors.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME YESENIA

The chart below is a perfect lesson on how pop-culture can drastically influence the usage of a name. Yesenia first appeared on the U.S. charts in 1971 which was the same year the film “Yesenia” was released to enthusiastic romantics everywhere. Not only that, but Yesenia debuted on the American female Top 1000 list at position #410 her first year ever on the charts. That’s impressively high for a first-timer! Obviously the Mexican film had everything to do with Yesenia’s abrupt popularity in the United States. The name saw another big push up the charts in 1987 (thanks to the telenovela) when Yesenia hit #137 on the Top 1000 (the best year ever). Since Yesenia was a name restricted to Hispanic-Americans (rather than the U.S. population at large), we cannot underscore how remarkable these numbers are. Yesenia was often on the Top 100 lists in states that have the highest concentration of Hispanic-Americans per capita: New Mexico, California, Texas, Arizona, Nevada, Florida, New York and Illinois. Because Yesenia’s success as a female name in the U.S. is largely a factor of pop-culture influences, it’s no surprise the name’s popularity has diminished today. Since the turn of the 21st century, Yesenia’s usage has dropped like rocks. Perhaps it’s time for yet another revival of both the telenovela and the name. It’s simply too lovely to be forgotten.
