Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Zackary

Zackary is a modern respelling of Zachary. Ultimately the name is derived from the Hebrew “Zekharyah” meaning "God has remembered". Zachary itself is a variant on the Biblical Zachariah, Zacharias or Zechariah. The latter was a minor prophet who is credited with the Old Testament Book of Zechariah. More well-known is Zachariah, who was the father of John the Baptist and husband of Elizabeth, a cousin of Mary, mother of Jesus. It is said that when he learned his wife was pregnant he did not believe it (she was well past child-bearing age) and so he was “struck dumb” for his disbelief. After the baby John was born, his speech was restored to him, but any relevant remarks he may have made are lost to history. It must not have been too bad, however, because he was named a saint and his feast day is celebrated on November 15th. Apparently God ‘remembered’ him despite Zachariah’s momentary skepticism over His omnipotence. Zachary has been a popular 20th century name among English speakers, but the modern spelling of Zackary is mainly used in America.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME ZACKARY

Zackary is pretty much a spelling variation restricted to the United States. It’s another example of American parents trying to find a more phonetically appealing version of an old traditional name. Zackary first appeared on the U.S. male naming charts in 1976 which was right after Zachary became a Top 100 favorite. Just as the 1990s was the most successful decade for the name Zachary (a Top 20 most commonly used boy’s name), so too was Zackary – just on a much small scale. Since we’ve entered the threshold of the 21st century, the name Zachary (and thus Zackary) has been dwindling in usage. Zachary is still quite popular, but Zackary is only used with mild moderation. Most people prefer the traditional spelling of Zachary, but it really comes down to a matter of preference. Zackary is a cute name and the “Z” sound makes it unique. The short version, Zack (or Zach) has a cool masculine quality (like Jake or Jack). This name which ‘God has remembered’ we agree is hard to forget.
