Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Zane

There are three potential meanings for the masculine name Zane. For one, Zain and Zayn are transcriptions of the Arabic زين which means “grace, beauty”. Zayin, Zain and Zayn are all transcriptions for the seventh letter of the Hebrew alphabet (as well as other Semitic languages such as Aramaic and Phoenician). In fact, the Greeks took this letter from the Phoenicians for their own letter Zeta (Z). From this perspective Zayin or Zain means “seventh” in Hebrew. Lastly, Zane is merely a surname-turned-first-name borne by author Zane Grey (b. Pearl Zane Grey, Zane being his mother’s maiden name). The origin of this surname is unknown. Zane’s entrance onto the popularity graphs in the United States (1921) coincides with the fame of American author Zane Grey (1872-1939) whose works idealized the Old West. Therefore Zane is often considered a very American name.

Historic Figures

WITH THE NAME ZANE

Zane Grey was a popular American author who wrote of adventures in the Old West. He was born Pearl Zane Grey in Zanesville, OH but later dropped his first name favoring his middle. Zanesville, Ohio was actually founded by his maternal ancestor. As a boy, Zane was engaged in every possible physical activity from horseback riding to fishing to hunting, and eventually received a scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania for baseball. Afterwards, like his father, he followed a career in dentistry. But alas, the outdoors called. He successfully wrote extensively and passionately about his love for adventures and became most famous for his work, “Riders of the Purple Sage” (1921).
