Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Zavier

Zavier is a modern phonetically altered English spelling of the Spanish name Xavier. Xavier actually originated as a Basque surname derived from a place name, from the Basque word “Etcheberria” meaning “the new house”. Xavier is the heavily altered Spanish form of this medieval Basque name (names have a tendency to alter greatly from language to language over the course of time). In the 16th century, the name was borne by Saint Francis Xavier (1506-1552) who was one of the co-founders of the Society of Jesus (more commonly known as the Jesuits). His missionaries took him to faraway places in the Orient where he tirelessly established the “new house” of Christianity. St. Xavier is thus the patron saint of missionaries as well as many exotic nations; his Feast Day is December 3. Xavier eventually morphed into a masculine given name in homage to Francisco de Xavier as he’s known in Spanish-speaking countries. Along with Ignatius (another co-founding member of the Jesuits), Xavier has long been a favorite among Spanish Catholics.
