Uma Thurman has two kids with actor Ethan Hawke (actually she was well along in her pregnancy with the first when the couple married in 1998). Daughter Maya Thurman Hawke was born in July of that year and was followed by baby brother Levon Green Hawke in 2002. The couple divorced in 2003. On July 15, 2012, Uma and her boyfriend, London-based financier Arpad Busson, welcomed a baby girl but waited over three months before releasing the name. So lame. The name? Rosalind Arusha Arkadina Altalune Florence Thurman-Busson (but they call her Luna for short). We waited three long months for THAT?! Whatev. The couple is keeping the origins of the five names private (five, really?). Don’t worry Uma. We are so past caring at this point. Congrats anyway. (yawn)
Alicia Keys and her hip-hop artist husband Kasseem David Dean (better known as Swizz Beatz) had a son on October 12, 2010 whom they named Egypt Daoud Ibarr Dean. We get the significance of Egypt for the young pop-star. After a near mental breakdown in late 2006, Alicia embarked on a solo “self-discovery” trip to Egypt for three weeks. The experience “freed” her and she’s described it as “the best choice that I’ve ever made.” So Egypt has a meaningful place in Key’s life – and now it has more! We’re not sure where Daoud Ibarr comes from (perhaps David and Abraham in some other Eastern-based language)? Fittingly, Keys also dedicated her song “Speechless” to her baby boy.
Former member of the boy band 98 Degrees, Nick Lachey, and his now-wife Vanessa welcomed their first child on September 12, 2012, a baby boy they named Camden John Lachey. Another TV personality, Kristin Cavallari, beat them to the punch when she named her first son Camden Jack on August 8, 2012. What’s up with the name Camden all of a sudden, especially in the circles of quasi-celebrity? It’s the transferred use of an English surname meaning “valley of camps”. Surnames like Camden are modern and trendy rather than old-school and traditional.
A first time father at the age of sixty-three, this is a man ready for parenting. A serial godfather to no less than ten children (including John Lennon’s son Sean, two of the Beckham children, not to mention Elizabeth Hurley’s son), Elton was ready to put his true parenting skills to test on Christmas Day 2010 when his son Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John was born to a surrogate mother. The other father, David Furnish, and Elton John were married in a civil-service ceremony five years earlier (almost to the day) in 2005. The two fathers had been in a same-sex partnership for 17 years prior to the birth of their son – much longer than most celebrity couples we’ve seen, that’s for sure! Zachary Jackson is a darling name, and Levon is a must-have. Anyone familiar with the tunes of Elton knows that “Levon was born on Christmas Day when the New York Times said God was dead.†Quite symbolic. But who, pray tell, does the honors of god-parenting go to for this child of the ϋber-godparent? None other than Elton John’s kindred spirit Lady Gaga.
Ricky Martin has stopped “Livin’ la Vida Loca†and started “Livin’ la Vida Familiaâ€. Now a doting father of twin boys Matteo and Valentino (born via surrogacy in August 2008), Martin is basking in the sunlight of his children. And we couldn’t be happier for him. Even though us ladies gave out a collective sigh upon learning that the Latino Adonis really belonged to the other team, we still admit our crush hasn’t gone away. We’re just glad he’s living an authentic life for himself now, and that he had two darling baby boys with whom to share it. And have you seen these boys lately? Clearly they have inherited Martin’s striking good-looks. Ricky Martin’s birth name is Enrique “Ricky” MartÃn Morales – so the boys carry on the Morales surname.
Actress and daughter of Aerosmith’s front-man Steven Tyler, Liv Tyler married British musician Royston Langdon (from the band Spacehog) in 2003. The following year the couple welcomed son Milo William Langdon on December 14, 2004. We’re not sure how the now-separated couple decided upon the unusual name Milo but it’s cute and quirky. It’s an off-beat alternative to the more popular Miles, although both names are believed to be derived from the same source meaning “soldier†in Latin. Milo of Croton was an ancient Roman citizen known for his military triumphs during the 6th century B.C. battles of the early Roman Republic. His great strength and power was so legendary it was said that he could carry a bull over his shoulders or pop-off his headband simply by applying pressure to his veins. From this perspective, Milo is synonymous with the power and strength of Herculean proportions.
Are there steroids available for baby-making? Then we declare Lance Armstrong guilty of using them! Armstrong has sired five children with two different women. His five year marriage to Kristin Richard produced three of them: Luke David Armstrong was born in 1999 and twin sisters Isabelle Rose and Grace Elisabeth followed in 2001. Due to Lance’s well-known battle with cancer, the children were made possible by banking his sperm prior to undergoing chemotherapy. This marriage was followed by Armstrong’s highly publicized relationship-turned-engagement-turned-split with musician Sheryl Crow. Purportedly the union came to an end because Armstrong didn’t want any more children but Crow did. Apparently he did want more children, just not with Crow. Lance Armstrong’s now-girlfriend Anna Hansen has given the controversial biker (and hugely successful cancer fundraiser) two more babies. Son Maxwell Edward Armstrong was born in 2009 and daughter Olivia Marie followed in 2010.
The man with the most overexposed chest and overrated talent in America is now a family man. Once a hot Hollywood bachelor whose favorite girlfriend was named Mary Juana, McConaughey was taken off the market by little-known Brazilian model Camila Alves in 2007. The cutesy, outdoorsy and sporty couple have also high-tailed it to Austin, Texas to raise their family out of the Hollywood scene (despite the fact they continue to be a paparazzi favorite). The pair has two children with a third on the way. Levi Alves McConaughey was born in 2008 and baby sister Vida Alves McConaughey followed in 2010. Levi is a perfect name for the laid-back parents and Vida is the Spanish and Portuguese word for “lifeâ€, something they obviously try and live to the fullest. Looking forward to hearing name choice #3.
Heartthrob English actor was finally taken off the market in 2010 when he married Australian supermodel Miranda Kerr (of Victoria’s Secret fame). Shortly thereafter, in January 2011, the couple welcomed their son Flynn Christopher Blanchard Copeland Bloom into the world. What’s up with all the names? We knew giving children two middle names instead of one is becoming the new vogue, but three? Really? It will take us three hours to calculate that baby’s numerology life path. Geez. Flynn Christopher Bloom sounds better in our opinion but we understand the significance of honoring family names. Flynn, by the way, wasn’t even on the American naming charts until these two made their announcement. It happens to be a very popular boy’s name in Australia and now it’s coming to America. Flynn means “red†in Irish Gaelic.
