Snooki

Snooki

Nicole Elizabeth “Snooki” Polizzi and her Jersey-born fiancé Jionni LaValle welcomed their Guido baby boy on August 26, 2012. Surprisingly for the unabashedly tacky reality TV star, the name the couple chose is pretty tame. Lorenzo Dominic LaValle. Lorenzo is the Italian form of Laurence, which is an Old Roman name identifying a man from Laurentum (an ancient city near Rome that some historians consider the first capital of the Latins). Dominic is also an Italian name from the Latin word “dominus” meaning “our Lord”. Didn’t we all expect some Jersey Italian tough-guy name like Guido, Dino, Gino, Rocco or Vito? Or even classic Italian names rarely used in the United States like Geronimo, Giuseppe, Luigi or Sergio? Snooki keeps on surprising us….

Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson

The King of Pop (may he rest in peace) has a legacy beyond just his music and brilliant choreography – M.J. also left behind three children. They were clearly his pride and joy. His oldest was born in 1997 and was named after his Dad: Prince Michael Joseph Jackson Jr. (commonly known as Prince). His sister Paris-Michael Katherine Jackson followed a year later in 1998. Finally, Jackson had his third child – a son – via surrogacy in 2002. Also named Prince Michael Joseph Jackson III the family refers to the little cutie as “Blanket” (no, that’s not his real name).

Pink

Pink

Singing sensation Pink and her motocross racing husband Carey Hart had a baby girl on June 2, 2011. They named her Willow Sage Hart. Yes, the name is a little hippy-ish but the couple is not exactly a beacon on conventionality. So maybe 1969 is calling and asking for its name back, but we like it. And it’s definitely nowhere as weird as Apple (sorry Gwyneth). We also expect that Baby Hart is destined for high intelligence. Why? Well, both of her names suggest so. Willow is a very pliant and bendable tree which was associated with intuition and imagination among the ancient Celtic people. And Sage is a vocabulary word denoting a wise person. So while Willow Sage may become a little brainiac, but there’s one thing we know for sure: she’s still all “Hart”.

Kobe Bryant

Kobe Bryant

Even through superstar basketball player Kobe Bryant and his wife Vanessa started divorce proceedings at the end of 2011, they still managed to produce two darling little girls out of this marriage. So all was not lost. Their first daughter was born January 19, 2003 and named Natalia Diamante Bryant. Daughter #2 Gianna Maria-Onore Bryant came along on May 1, 2006. Both monikers have a distinct Italian flair. Very pretty, very feminine and very sophisticated.

Kate Gosselin

Kate Gosselin

Watching Type-A personality Kate Gosselin rule the sofa-talk-time with her husband on “Jon & Kate Plus 8” made us wonder when Jon would reach for that doobie. I mean, this girl can TALK. Poor guy always seemed desperate for some type of relaxer in order to deal with old gabber-jaws. Still Americans fell in love with this family of ten even if we found Kate rather charming with some reluctance. Unable to conceive children despite her young age, Kate and Jon turned to IVF and first had twins Cara Nicole and Madelyn Kate (“Mady”) in 2000. Then in 2004, the couple made the news when Kate birthed sextuplets on May 10, 2004. The rest is history. The six children were named Alexis Faith, Hannah Joy, Aaden Jonathan, Collin Thomas, Leah Hope and Joel Kevin.

Freddie Prinze, Jr.

Freddie Prinze, Jr.

One of the most understated marriages in Hollywood is that of Freddie Prinze, Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar. They’ve been married for nearly 10 years without any scandalous drama typical of the entertainment industry scene. Good for them. Not only that, but the couple waited eight years before having their first kid (perhaps they wanted to enjoy each other first). Charlotte Grace Prinze was born on September 19, 2009. What an all-around “graceful” name! Another September baby came into the world for the couple in 2012 but this time it’s a boy! They haven’t revealed the new baby’s name yet…can’t wait!

Sarah Michelle Gellar

Sarah Michelle Gellar

Sarah Michelle Gellar is just one of those actresses hard not to love. She’s our little kick-ass Vampire slayer. Married to Freddie Prinze, Jr. since 2001, the couple has had an impressive run without any drama or scandal surrounding their relationship (as is often the case in Hollywood marriages). Their family of two recently became a family of three in 2009 with the birth of their first child, a daughter named Charlotte Grace Prinze. In late September 2012, Sarah Michelle and Freddie expanded to a party of four when they welcomed a baby boy to the brood. The couple has yet to release the baby’s name. C’mon guys, what’s the big secret?

Drew Barrymore

Drew Barrymore

The lovely Drew Barrymore has continued the illustrious Hollywood Barrymore name when she gave birth to and named her baby daughter Olive Barrymore Kopelman on September 26, 2012 (the baby-daddy is Barrymore’s husband, art consultant Will Kopelman). For the 1999 Christmas season Barrymore provided the eponymous voiceover for “Olive, The Other Reindeer”, an animated television special. Perhaps that’s where Drew got her baby’s name. The over-played and ultra-popular Olivia was given to more than 17,000 baby girls in 2011. But the quaintly offbeat two-syllable Olive was only bestowed 750 times that same year. Olive is less fancy-pants and more quirky – just like the baby’s mother!

Barack and Michelle Obama

Barack and Michelle Obama

What’s a celebrity baby name list without the inclusion of our nation’s First Family? President Barack Obama and his lovely First Lady Michelle have two daughters. And ever since the Obama’s came onto the American national political stage, their daughters’ names have soared on the charts. Malia Ann was born in 1998 and Natasha – who is called Sasha – arrived in 2001. Malia is a fitting name for a daughter of a Christian Daddy who grew up in Hawaii (Malia is the Hawaiian equivalent to Mary). And Natasha is a pretty choice as well, with Sasha sounding laid-back and friendly.

Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman has four children. Two were adopted with her first husband Tom Cruise. The latter two children she had biologically with second husband country music star Keith Urban. The adopted children are Isabella Jane (b. 1992) and Connor Anthony (b. 1995). Kidman married Keith Urban in 2006 and in 2008 the couple welcomed their first daughter together which Nicole gave birth to at the age of 41. They named her Sunday Rose Kidman Urban. Their second daughter together (and Kidman’s third daughter) was born via surrogacy at the end of 2010 (Nicole was 43). This one they named Faith Margaret Kidman Urban. The girls’ middle names (i.e., Rose and Margaret) are namesakes in honor of Urban’s and Kidman’s late grandmothers respectively. Sunday was named after the day of the week that Nicole and Keith cherish – a relaxing day surrounded by family. It gave them a sense of happiness and beauty. The name Faith came out of, well, the couple’s “faith” in God’s plan for another baby.
